was inspired by a scene in Rehearsal: A Different Drummer,
where a main character is watching the rain outside the window and notices
the difference in the hard cement splashes and the soft grass landings.
It was written for my children after yet another military move and illustrated
in color pencil. I made copies to share with my nieces and nephews,
and their parents and grandparents showed it off. When I started to
get requests, I decided to make it more public. The 2010 version features
actual blocks from a quilt made by Dorothy LW Murphy (Mom, to me) in
honor of this little story.
Stanley has spread and is now being used in grief groups and missionary
work, as well as gifts to those fighting their own personal struggles.
Because of its popularity, Stanley now has a hardcover edition with
all new illustrations: bright, bold acrylic paintings spread across
30 8x8 pages.
